NESN announced today that former Red Sox outfielder and 2004 post-season hero, Dave Roberts, has joined the network to serve as a Red Sox studio analyst. Roberts will join Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley and Jim Rice for the network’s popular pre and post game shows.

Roberts will make his NESN debut this Monday from the new Yankee Stadium when the Red Sox play the Yankees. During the game, he will also join NESN’s Red Sox broadcast team of Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy in the booth for a couple of innings.

He played for 5 different teams compiling a .266 career batting average with 243 stolen bases while only being caught 58 times for a very impressive 81% success rate. He enjoyed his best year in 2006 with the San Diego Padres when he hit .293 as the team’s leadoff hitter and collected 49 stolen bases.

  1. I hope Dave will be more entertaining then Merloni, who did nothing other then spout one tired baseball cliche after another.

  2. Regarding the last sentence. I’d say his best year was 2004, actually. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t he go through the entire season, NL and AL, as well as the post-season, without being caught stealing even once?

  5. Judging by what I heard from Roberts on Bill Simmons’ podcast, his knowledge of the game and the way he can present it to an audience is a LOT more like Eck than Rice. Good hire by NESN, but I am confused because he did say he lives in San Diego full-time.

  6. Sorry, John Henry; This does not count as a minority hire. This is still the whitest franchise in sports.
