I'm just curious why people here seem to be feeling so negatively about the Patriots' chances in 2009.

I agree that the defense needs work, but Belichick has been addressing it in free agency and I'm sure he'll address it even more in the draft in 11 days.

Brady is healthy--or at least they think he'll be healthy, otherwise they wouldn't have dealt away Cassel. This is basically the same team that's gone 29-6 over their last 35 regular and post-season games. And this is a league today where the rules are so skewed in favor of offense that a team with the 32nd-ranked (that would be dead last) run defense in the league in 2006 (the Colts) can still win a Super Bowl.

If the Pats don't win 12 games in 2009, I'd be very surprised, and 12 wins gets them to the playoffs. After that, it's anyone's title.

Howie Carr posts here? Awesome. I didn't recognize you without your unfunny repetitive use of the word "hack" in every sentence.
Let me know when Jay Severin, the Putt Putt twins, and Tommy Fineran starts posting here as well so we can consolidate all the people I don't listen to on the radio in one spot!

The problem with the C's is that they haven't show they can beat Cleveland on the road. And now the Cavs have home floor advantage.
The problem with the B's is that they're facing the Flopping Toilet Seats in the first round. Ugh.

I agree with the rest of your premise, but both winter teams have a while to go before I can breathe a sigh of relief.

How exactly are the C's and B's far from certain contenders? Both teams are expected to contend deep into the playoffs. If that's not contending I don't know what is.

Now are either of them an automatic leadpipe cinch to win it all? Of course not. But seriously, tell me that either team isn't one of the top four teams in their respective league right now. The fact that they are both considered to be one of the last four teams standing in their leagues--not to mention that the Red Sox and Patriots are in the same boat--makes them all legit contenders for a championship. Doesn't mean they will definitely win, but how many other cities around the country can proclaim this about their top four teams?

Add in the Revolution if you want (they typically go deep into the MLS playoffs even though they are still looking for their first championship), BC & BU hockey too, and we are so spoiled around these parts that the weeidiots don't even deserve to have teams all this good at the same time to root for.

Jon, we had a pretty good stretch around 1776. Other than that I can't think of a time when a fan can realistically be happy about professional sports in this town and not seem naive. 4 championships? No, it won't happen but this is the time when you find out which fans/media enjoy misery more than the actual sport.

Okay, the C's and B's are far from certain contenders, the Red Sox are awful, and the Pats have a lot of work to do with their defense. But it's a little ****ing early to give up on any of them.

But if this isn't the best 8 year stretch in the history of Boston sports, I'd like to know what is.

No matter your opinion regarding Pitino's time in Boston, he left his legacy here with the phrase 'Fellowship of the Miserable'. That sums up anyone who wants to post what they did on the Globe comment board. They 'bring it' all right...
