It really wasn’t a debate in my eyes, just a creation by the bitter media. I started following the Patriots when they drafted Bledsoe and have many great memories of him and his accomplishments (game vs. Vikings where he set single passing game records, vs. Pitt in the fog, his duels with Marino, etc).

That being said, Bledsoe “was what we though he was”: a statue QB who held the ball too long and tried to thread the needle one too many times. Too many people blamed everyone around him, rather than Bledsoe during his failures. Of course, we all know Brady walked in with the same teammates and led them to the title.

Good old Eddie, you could always count on him to miss the big picture.

I remember him ripping the John Henry ownership group AFTER the Sox won the World Series in ’04 because “they’re not making any money for the limited partners!!”

Of course, the fact that Eddie’s pal O’Donnel didn’t get the team had NOTHING to do with his animosity towards the Henry group, right?

As if the fans who’d been starving for a W.S. title their whole lives cared that the limited partners weren’t making any money on their investment. Puh-leeze.

There were two people to me who really stick out when it came to the defense of Bledsoe. Eddie Andelman who was good friends with Bledsoe looked for any perceived mistake Brady would make to prove that he was inferior to Bledsoe. The game against the Rams in the regular season was a good point. Brady had a pass that was intercepted. The pass was perfect but went right through the hands of Kevin Faulk. Andelman said it was terrible pass, while the legendary Danny from Quincy said, “yea Eddie it hit him in the worst possible place, right in the numbers.”

The other person who was a national media member was John Clayton from ESPN who had an obvious bias being from Seattle and friends with Bledsoe’s dad. ESPN did a poll with their experts on who should start the Super Bowl for the Patriots and I believe the only two people who said Bledsoe were Len Pascarelli who I find utterly clueless and Clayton.

As much of a warrior Bledsoe was, he never learned from his mistakes. I also remembering a Peter King story in SI that talked about the lack of work ethic by Bledsoe while Brady is a relentless worker.

First: The OP is clearly referring to 2001.

Second: Technically speaking, 2001 was the third super bowl (’85, ’96, I believe), so you are wrong on that count.

Third: You may need surgical assistance to remove that foot from your mouth.

I know Tuna left the team in New Orleans, but yes Virginia (and Paul), the Pats did make it to the Super Bowl in the 90′s (as well as the 80′s)

Lost in all of the numbers Bledsoe put up in that first year with Buffalo is the fact that: A) he was a much, much better QB in the first 8 games that year than in the second 8; and B) Brady, the “system” quarterback, actually led the NFL in touchdown passes in 2002 and nearly carried a team with a wretched, downright awful defense into the playoffs, while winning the last regular season game against Miami (with a great 4th quarter comeback) playing with a shoulder that required offseason surgery.

I liked Bledsoe, I really did, but his media defenders didn’t do him any favors after he left town if you ask me. Drew clearly was at the end of his career as an effective, winning NFL QB when Belichick got rid off him, but the anti-Belichick agendas of some in the local media simply blinded them to that fact.
