2011 Approval Ratings – Gordon Edes

Today, we’re going to have a look at ESPNBoston baseball writer Gordon Edes.

Edes joined ESPNBoston in November of 2009, after spending just over a year with Yahoo! Sports. Prior to that, he had covered the Red Sox for 12 years (1996-2008) with the Boston Globe.

Edes went to high school in Massachusetts, and had his first article published in the Fitchburg, Mass. Sentinel when he was 14. During his career he has covered all four major sports (though mostly focusing on baseball) for newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the National Sports Daily and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He returned home in 1996 to join the Globe.

While at the Globe, Edes was involved in the infamous Carl Everett confrontation, which resulted in the outfielder stating that he would not speak with the Globe, Edes, or his “Curly Haired Boyfriend.”

Approve. Seemed to do a decent job with the Sox when he was here. He was certainly better than Cafardo. Plus, look at the fabulous hair on Gordo – how can you not approve?

  • NASCL

Good reporter. Good guy to knock back a few beers with. Hearty "Approve!"

  • naop

Good in print/html, radio, TV, and twitter. Has never fell into the trap of talking down or ridiculing Red Sox fans for their fandom. Bruce brought up the Carl Everett incident, the CHB still beats that dead horse while it never seemed to register in any of Gordo's columns. Approve!

  • B Dub

    Let’s see…

Isn’t a lazy a Nick Cafardo. Doesn’t make himself The story just reports the facts. Is candid and has no hatchets to bury. Big approve.

  • Winning

Always enjoyed his writing and appearances on NESN. Has a good demeanor and seems like a good guy. I don't write him as much anymore now that he's on ESPN but I still think he does a good job. Another perfect example of a class act writer that doesn't make himself the story ( see Shank)

  • bholmes

never cared for anyone named gordon. lightfoot, flash, gecko, sting. all dicks. disapprove.

  • billy bawb

    strongly approve. guy is awesome

  • Whitey B

Allow me to clear up some myths about my 16 year "vacation."

Actually, I left because I was sick of reading the CHB. But I came home for Gordon.

I like Edes–he's always been a reliable source of information and he doesn't indulge in schtick such as imaginary curses, inflammatory statements, and all-around buffoonery like so many of his colleagues do. I emailed him a few times when he was at the Globe and he always responded very professionally and politely. APPROVE.

Oh, and agree with Funk that the hair is fab.

    • Funkhouser

Suzy knows her stuff. Not only sports but shopping as well…

  • Forbin

Solid reporter. Best on the Sox beat. Respects the readers. One of the best at appropriately showing his Lunenburg & Central MA roots in his writing from time to time. Also doesn't get immediately self-defensive at reader feedback and rolls with things on twitter (unlike @PeteAbe).

  • Clint Tyree

Offers good analysis and reports the facts. Both McAdam and Edes are the best of the baseball writers in Boston.

  • Randy

Have you read his stuff on ESPN?

Totally mailed in. Very little effort and whatever he does post is hours behind everybody else. Breaks no stories, either. The game has past him by.

  • NutCracker

Strong Approve. Gordon Edes produces very good work and is an absolute gentleman to boot.

  • Classless

anyone who pisses off Carl Everett is a winner in my book.

  • Brooks Murray

Is he part time? He never seems to cover games. I think he has retired since his post.
