Red Sox/Cubs, U.S. Open Highlight Sports Weekend

The Red Sox are in Chicago to take on the Cubs for a weekend series at Wrigley Field. Expect plenty more of Theo Epstein throughout the weekend as the former Red Sox GM faces his former team for the first time.

Also on tap is the U.S. Open, taking place at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. NBC and ESPN have the coverage of the event.

The Patriots wrapped up the offseason portion of their team activities by canceling the final practice of minicamp. Next stop, training camp. Get all the Patriots stories this morning at PatriotsLinks.com.

A few media-related links this morning for your perusal and discussion:

In NBA coverage, TNT team beats ESPN group – Chad Finn loves Mike Breen and thinks that Mike Felger’s Celtics bashing really isn’t all that responsible for his show’s May ratings loss to WEEI. He has a few other media items as well.

Inside Look: How The Boston Celtics Win in Social Media and Digital – Celtics Senior Director of Interactive Media Peter Stringer talks to Brian Solis about the winning strategies the Celtics employ in the digital world.

David Duval’s Roller Coaster Career Goes Through Broadcast Booth – In my SB Nation Boston media column, I’ve got former World #1 golfer David Duval taking an involuntary break from his clubs to serve as an analyst on ESPN’s coverage of the U.S. Open this weekend.

D.A. rules at the top of the Hub – John Molori talks to 98.5 evening host Damon Amendolara about coming to Boston sports radio as an outsider, and about his golf passion.

ESPN’s Sean McDonough to have surgery on bone near brain – Michael Hiestand of USA Today has former Red Sox broadcaster Sean McDonough needing to undergo brain surgery for a rare condition.

Yup. I’ve pinged PSF, haven’t heard back. Seems to be a server issue. His other site is also down, and it is on the same server.

    Nice piece on Duval Bruce.

Didn’t have a chance to look it up, but if memory serves he rolled in that British Open win?

I don’t understand the fascination with DA. The only thing I like about him is he’s not Mike Adams.

    So, two stark contrasts:

ESPN is doing a wonderful job with Euro 2012. From soccer people, like me, to folks I’ve never known to watch anything before, everyone is loving it. They mix in a perfect blend of technical knowledge and good commentary on it. It shows how when ESPN really wants to put its muscle behind something, they can.

Chad Finn’s article covered some of this.

    —————

On one of the megalinks you posted, I was following the USOpen once Twitter had blown up with Tiger in the lead. Chris Berman calling golf? are you f**king serious? First, no matter how you like your golf, some guy screaming and trying to construct poorly-formed “NFLisms” is.. im not sure Dennis Miller could even in his hayday. And, I don’t mind him on NFL coverage so much, even though I think he goes too overboard certain times. I know he recently signed a contract and I guess it is well known that “Boomer” is bigger than ESPN, but you’re willing to ruin something like the USOpen to get your money out of him? James Miller, of the ESPN Book, said something to the extent of the Masters specifically telling ESPN not to put him on coverage.

I’m not sure what is worse: Magic on Basketball or Berman doing Golf.

    Thankfully, NBC takes over today.

Bruce, has there been a bit of spam lately? I’ve noticed a few other Disqus boards getting hit lately

    Last post for the weekend:

Figured this was going to happen since he’s been off the air since all the stuff broke.

Damon Amendolara is the brightest star to hit the Boston sports radio waves in decades. His up tempo, contemporary style is a huge reason why 98.5 The Sports Hub has supplanted WEEI as the top rated sports radio station in the region.”

Ummm… are we sure D.A. didn’t write this article himself?
