Winners and Losers From The Spring Radio Book

Editor’s note: this is a guest column, and does not necessarily reflect the views of Bruce Allen or BSMW.

By George Cain

As reported by Chad Finn of the Boston Globe the quarterly Arbitron ratings are out and miraculously WEEI is back on top, at least in a couple of time slots.  It wasn’t more than six months ago that it seemed the Sports Hub had buried WEEI after the results from the Autumn ratings book showed them behind in all three major time slots.  So there is hope for the Boston Red Sox in 2014.  Let’s quickly recap the Winners and Losers from the last quarter.

WINNER:  The Big Show.  Ordway and Holley are back from the dead.  They finished second place in the market with a strong 7.9 share versus Felger and Massarotti’s third place 6.2 share.   No doubt the Celtics long run, positive basketball discussion, the start of the Red Sox season, and the quick elimination of the Bruins helped the Big Show.   The Sports Hub should not try to point to the Celtics and Red Sox programming as an excuse.   The content has simply been better.   Holley has hit his stride and Felger has lost his.

LOSER:  Felger and Massarotti.  The drop in numbers should be concerning, from an 11.0 share in the Fall, to a 9.8 share in the Winter and now a 6.2 share in the Spring.  If you’ve read anything written by myself or Bruce Allen in the last 3 months none of this should be a surprise.  You can’t campaign strictly on a message of negativity and the same goes for broadcast radio.  While WEEI was giving insight into the Celtics run, Felger was killing NBA basketball and Kevin Garnett on a daily basis.  And as Jerry MaGuire once said, “That is not what inspires people!”  Felger needs to take a good look in the mirror and decide how far he wants to take the contrarian persona.  Does he want to be Skip Bayless or Michael Felger?  When Felger came to the Sports Hub after another brief stint on WEEI he had hit his stride.  He came off as charismatic, driven and had a fresh viewpoint that stark contrast to the stale radio in the afternoons on WEEI.  A matter of fact, HE made WEEI change.  But, like WEEI, Felger fell in love with his own success.  The show began a simulcast on Comcast and it became all about him.  He doesn’t like callers, mobile phones, the Celtics, the Red Sox or how the Patriots do business.  It’s never about the sports, it’s about Michael Felger.  No wonder he’s been such a proponent of Bobby Valentine, they have a lot in common.  Tony Mazz to me is only good when he’s doing his baseball show.  He’s Felger’s parrot and not an opposing point of view.  He all about the negative every single day, and if I were the Sports Hub I would be making some inquiries to Kirk Minihane now.

WINNER: Toucher and Rich.  This has now become the best talk radio show in the Boston terrestrial radio market. It’s not a sports show and if you listen daily they don’t masquerade as one.  They have appeal not just in the 18-49 demo but 25-54 where these ratings were done.  Whether it is tales of Rob Gronkowski or Bob Kraft’s acting lessons, these guys can take a funny topic and crush it with their audience.  They dominate the local twittersphere and have strong appeal with women, very rare for sports radio. They also sprinkle in the local sports experts and conduct entertaining and informative interviews for guys who are not true Sports talks hosts.

WINNER: Dennis & Callahan.  D&C did a solid third place with a 7.3 to T&R’s 8.0 in second place. (WZLX and Carter Allen was #1)  They cut out or were forced to cut the everyday political radio and usually keep it to sports. Callahan was once a great sportswriter and Dennis was once, well he’s been around the sports world for a while.  They know the major sports at a national and local level and don’t play favorites.  D&C are never going to oust Toucher and Rich.  They just don’t appeal to enough of the demographics.  But, by being the “totally sports” alternative they will always maintain at least their 3rd place spot.

WINNER:  Gresh and Zo.  They eked out second place finish with a rating win of 6.8 to 6.7 in the midday time slot.  I don’t want to continue to lament the fact that this show is weak.  During football season they have more appeal but they still over-analyze with their “complicated” discussion around formations and receiver patterns.   There is no doubt they benefit greatly from the Toucher and Rich lead in.  It pays to follow a good show, ask Castle.

LOSERMut and Merloni.  STILL?  If there was a time to grab second place this was it.   Yes, the show has come all the way from 13th and a 3.1 share to third and a 6.7.   But something is still missing and it;s missing from both hosts.   If I am Julie Kahn or Jason Wolfe I look to Minihane and maybe Dale Arnold again and regain second place.

WINNER: WEEI nights.   Celtics playoff games and Red Sox baseball gave them the #1 spot all by themselves.  They posted a 9.5 share to the Sports Hub’s 5.5.  If you happen to get stuck listening to the radio on a night without a sporting event, you’re probably out of luck. Damon Amendolara continues to improve in this market and someday might be ready to host his own show, most likely out-of-state.  He and producer Chris Curtis at least make a concerted effort to bring different topics to the radio.  Mikey Adams, might be funny, but his act tires quickly.

LOSER:  The Sports Hub.  It’s time for Mike Thomas, VP of Programming to take a good hard look at these numbers and make some decisions, You don’t want to put too much weight into this ratings book, because it is true these things can be cyclical and that things were falling right for WEE last quarter just like they did for the Sports Hub with the Bruins at the same time last year.    The football season is coming.  It’s hopefully, going to be a big year for the Patriots and the next two ratings books should really are going to be fascinating to media geeks like myself.  Felger is the wild card in all of this.  When he wants to talk sports and keep a positive but objective tone he’s one of the best in the market.   However, when he makes the show about him and his world view, well that’s when the show suffers.  I expect if Felger doesn’t change his tone, Thomas might demand him to change it.

Finally, I can’t help but wonder if the intermingling of sports hosts on Comcast Sports Net/Mohegan Sun/Uno’s whatever, is at play here.  You have Felger, Massarotti, Holley, Merloni, Gasper, and Gresh all playing prominent roles on those shows.   Some of the best TV is when Holley and Felger co-host together.  It brings out the best in both personalities and don’t think for a second that doesn’t play into ratings.  This should be an interesting next 12 months both behind the microphones and at the negotiation tables for everyone involved.

“This has now become the best talk radio show in the Boston terrestrial radio market. It’s not a sports show and if you listen daily they don’t masquerade as one”
    Please George.
This show is nothing more than a Howard Stern wannabe. From Fred’s ENDLESS complaining about the most mundane things in life, to ASK A PINKHAT.
It’s nothing more than finding what’s had the most view on youtube the day before and replaying it.
They replay there own bits constantly.
They were back from vacation this past monday, in the 7 o’clock hour on tuesday they were replaying a monday piece?
5 hours into the week and your out of material?
Plus, the endless Detroit Tiger, St. Louis Cardinal, Michigan State chatter we can live without.
They are in the same spot D&C were years ago when Stern left for satellite, there’s no real competition for them and they are nothing if COASTING along.
As far as D&C “They know the major sports at a national and local level” – that is way off base.
All the games start to late for them and they do a quick ff thru the dvr in the mornings.
    They know nothing.

Agreed, T∞R blow. Fred’s a lightweight in over his head, yesterday flipped it on during the car ride and he was complaining about the lack of windows in his office and how heavy the door to his office was. This crap works if you’re Howard Stern otherwise it’s just completely unlistenable. Last time I had them on he was complaining about his wife’s commute. This guy is a fat lazy entitled dbag. We already have John Dennis on one channel.

Amazing that the Sports Hub is actually worse than WEEI after a year or two on the air.

“This (T&R) has now become the best talk radio show in the Boston terrestrial radio market.”

Contrary to what many have opined in these comments section about the T & R listener base, I’m in fact a massive sports fan, have been for all of my life (36), used to love the Big Show and it’s the only talk radio show that I listen to.

“4 hours of nitwits and their non-sensical trade proposals calling two blowhards masquerading as experts.” …. you just described Felger and Mazz perfectly….

      • Homer Nixon

        I agree

  • http://twitter.com/RoadToOctober RoadToOctober

I agree with pretty much everything in this article. Felger and Mazz just harp on negative, negative, negative. Even hear Felger say once that even though the Sox were in the midst of 11-3 run, he still wanted to rip them. Just bad radio. I LOVED felger and maxx when they started, but their act has grown tired. They look for the negative part of EVERY event. During the Celtics incredible run, they were unbearable to listen to. Just ripping the refs and ripping garnett and pierce. One day they were ripping Rondo and actually used the words “he sucks”. The following week they were singing his praises. Brutal. I totally disagree with the fact that T&R have the best morning show in the area. If I want that type of radio, I’ll listen to Howard Stern who does it better. But if i want to listen to sports talk (which is why I would turn to a sports station), then D&C blow them away. The fact that T&R acknowledge the fact that they are not really a sports show is kind of embarrassing considering they are on “Boston’s new home for sports”. D&C used to get ripped all the time for not talking enough sports, now T&R get praised for it? I don’t get it.

  • http://twitter.com/RoadToOctober RoadToOctober

Ok, but T&R are useless as personalities on a sports radio station. their show is about 2-3% sports and the rest is all skits and gags. Not what I listen to a sports station for.

    • bsmfan

I don’t think anyone does. I can’t stand it because of that. I have to switch between D+C and ESPNRadio because of it.

However, it seems like T+R are pretty cemented with their base. The folks I know who listen to them love them. They would not switch to anything else, at all. It seems like the majority of their base is the same.

  • Petey

When does Holley’s contract run out? The Sports Hub should make a run at him to co-host with Felger. I agree on Minihane. He is a rising star.

  • JSR

Felger needs to have a co-host that calls him on his BS. Minihane would do that, sure, but I think Chris Gasper is the more likely candidate if they chose to give Mazz the boot. He’s not perfect, but he’s way better than Mazz, He calls Felger out all the time.

We saw Mike Thomas get rid of Tanguay pretty quickly, so it’s safe to say he won’t be scared to shake things up if things continue like this for 98.5.

    • bsmfan

Bertrand has called him on it many times. Gasper is also pretty good in studio but I haven’t heard him long enough on (usually one hour on a Friday) as to where he really could get into it with Felger.

However, maybe GearBear knew about the ratings books and that’s why he has been getting pretty “hey! look at me!” lately on CSNNE.

  • Stuabs19

Both midday and night shows are awful. My question is how can the nighttime ratings be compared to take out the effects of games?

    • danmateus

The best nighttime show is on Stern 101…The Scott Ferrel Show. This show is the perfect show at night. Rock music in the background, babes, drugs, gambling and talking all sports even talking about what’s happening on the tv in front of him. And the callers are hilarious.

      • http://twitter.com/RoadToOctober RoadToOctober

        Drugs are a good thing?

  • alanjay70

Callahan talking politics so much of the time forced me to 98.5 listening where T+R seemed like the exact opposite. The skits were humerous. But now, Fred’s constant complaining of everything and his poor treatment of Wallace has pushed me back to D+C. If the politics come back then I’ll find another station to listen to in my am commute. I agree that Felger has gotten stale. He was must-listen for a while, but not now. The Big Show got much better once Smerlas & company were no longer on the air. I do feel the earlt Bruins exit hurt 98.5 as they have much better Bruins talk then WEEI.

  • Ed Brown’s Garage

Just want to check if I read this correctly concerning D&C: “They know the major sports at a national and local level and don’t play favorites.” They have good guests which helps them immensely with sports outside of the Boston Market. Outside of golf I wonder when the last time either of them has watched an out of market major sport from begining to end. As for favorites, Curt Schilling anyone…

  • danmateus

I would replace Mazz with Gaspar. Gaspar is the only one who goes after Felger when he says something supid about Pats managment.

  • JimmyHook

Replacing Mutnansky with Minihane is not the answer. Mut is bland, but Minihane is a terrible radio presence. It sounds like his tongue is too big for his mouth and I don’t agree with anything he says.

  • http://twitter.com/theaisleseatcom Andy Dursin

I totally agree that EEI ought to be more interested in dumping Mutt & Merloni than ever right now. The station’s ratings are on an overall uptick but the one deficient area is still the midday show — and it’s only going to get worse when football season starts, since that’s Gresh & Zo’s strong suit. Will be interesting to see what happens there…personally I don’t get the Minihane interest at all (he’s improved, but he still lacks personality/charisma on air), but it still would be better than Mutt.

  • BMMD

Mr. Cain, If you’re going to write a column like this, at least do your homework first. You fail to account for the number of people that now watch
Felger and Mazz rather than listen to them on the radio because of the
simulcast on CSNE. A large proportion of the sports radio listening crowd are people who have nothing better to do in
the middle of the day. Felger and Mazz’s dip in radio
ratings correlate exactly with the time point at which they started
simulcasting on comcast. You take the ratings of both modalities
combined (radio & tv) and they’re still blowing Ordway & Holley out of the
water. These ratings should make the Big Show worry more than celebrate.

  • bosox3054

Minnehan seriously? You’re looking replace negativity with a guy whose biggest moment is attacking a broadcaster for no good reason? He’s just as negative as Mazz without the wealth of baseball knowledge. Rising star in the same way people around here called Merloni a rising star 3 years ago….a false one.
